Mt Coot-tha Quarry Closure & Renewal

The Mt Coot-tha Quarry is the next big challenge facing MCPA.  Please support the initiatives as details are made public.

Fact sheet:

  • Opened in 1895 and owned by Brisbane City Council since 1925.

  • 30 hectare site (twice the size of Roma St Parklands)

  • Designated as a Key Resource Area under the State Planning Act (KRA42)

  • Council intended to close the quarry in 1998 but it was extended to 2015, and then all the way out to 2032, each time with zero public consultation.

  • Provides material for use in BCC road projects (& possibly sale to contrctrs)

  • Council has alternative nearby options for supply of quarried material including Bracalba quarry

  • Council has 2025 as possible closure timeframe; discloses no plans for rehabilitation; & apparently no funds set aside for quarry rehabilitation
